Happy Art Vibes: Introduction


Every year, on March 20th, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Happiness. Established by the United Nations in 2012, this day recognises happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of people worldwide. The day is co-ordinated by Action For Happiness. This amazing organisation has a clear mission ‘to help people create a happier world, with a culture that prioritises happiness and kindness.’ I love this statement. Now, more than ever, while our world faces conflict, disasters and an uncertain future, this mission should be at the forefront of every nation, every leader and every human on our precious planet.


With that in mind, this year, 2025, the focus for International Day of Happiness will be ‘Caring’ and ‘Sharing’. Simple words that can have an immediate impact on someone’s life. That's why I wanted to share my 'Happy Art Vibes' blog with you, because I truly care about people and how they feel. I want to help.

The Origins and Purpose of International Day of Happiness


The concept of the International Day of Happiness was inspired by Bhutan. This Buddhist nation is a country that values national happiness over national income ever since the early 1970s. Indeed, despite being a teenager, their King, His Majesty Jigme Singye Wangchuck, believed happiness to be a far more effective indicator of progressive development, over and above Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Additionally, Bhutan’s ancient legal code states, “if the government cannot create happiness for its people, then there is no purpose for government to exist”. I can imagine many of you are nodding frantically in agreement with that statement! So, in 1972, Bhutan famously adopted the goal of Gross National Happiness (GNH) over GDP. You can read all about their holistic approach to progress here.


The United Nations General Assembly, inspired by Bhutan, adopted a resolution in 2011, recognising happiness as a ‘fundamental human goal’. Just one year later, in July 2012, the UN proclaimed March 20th as the International Day of Happiness. This day echoes the origins of Bhutan’s GNH, that progress should be about increasing human happiness and well-being, not just growing the economy. The very first International Day of Happiness therefore took place on March 20th, 2013. The theme for this first event, ‘Happy Heroes’, a celebration of all those in a community who strive to bring happiness and joy to others.


What Does the International Day of Happiness Entail?

The International Day of Happiness is a global celebration that encourages individuals, communities, and governments to prioritise happiness and well-being. It's a day to reflect on what truly makes us happy and to promote activities that contribute to our collective well-being. As you can imagine, this speaks to me and my happy art vibes completely!


The United Nations invites people of all ages, as well as every classroom, business, and government, to join in the celebration.

Activities on this day vary widely and can include educational events, public discussions, concerts, festivals, and community gatherings. The goal is to engage as many people as possible in the pursuit of happiness and to encourage actions that promote well-being at both individual and societal levels.


Who Can Get Involved?


Everyone is invited to participate in the International Day of Happiness. Whether you're an individual looking to spread joy in your community, or a teacher aiming to educate students about the importance of happiness. Maybe you are a business striving to improve employee well-being, or a government official crafting policies for a happier society? Alternatively, maybe your a passionate individual, like myself, wanting to share what works for you, like my happy art vibes? There's a place for you in this global celebration.


Communities can organise local events that promote social connection and well-being. Educational institutions can incorporate lessons on happiness and mental health into their curricula. Businesses can host workshops or activities that boost employee morale and job satisfaction (check out my Corporate Wellbeing Workshops). Governments can use this day to assess and implement policies that enhance the quality of life for their citizens. Individuals can share their own experiences to help others find an inspirational avenue that works for them.

At Minnie La La Designs, the International Day of Happiness holds a special place in my heart. My artwork, affectionately nicknamed 'Happy Art,' is all about promoting joy through vibrant colours and imaginative designs. I believe that art has the power to uplift spirits and transform spaces, bringing happiness to both creators and admirers.I am so passionate about my happy art vibes I hold workshops and painting parties to promote the healing power of creativity. Are you feeling a little sceptical about my words? Do you think I'm just another quirky artists? Let’s see what the scientists have to say!


The Therapeutic Power of Art


Engaging in creative activities like painting and drawing has been scientifically proven to have positive effects on mental health. Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy. It uses creative processes, like painting, sculpture and pottery to help address various mental health issues, including mood disorders, anxiety, and stress. It is a perfect medium for individuals to use to express emotions that might be difficult to articulate verbally. This leads to improved self-awareness, increased self-esteem and better mental health. Indeed, my own happy art vibes transpired from the deep-seated grief I felt after losing my fabulous Mama.


Moreover, creating art can induce a state of 'flow,' where individuals become deeply engrossed in their activity, leading to reduced stress levels and enhanced well-being. I keep telling people this all the time, happy art vibes do exist!


Additionally, I have witnessed the positive power of creativity with my own eyes. Here is a quote from an amazing lady that attended one of my workshops earlier this year, she is describing how she felt after the class. ‘I cried, not because my painting dripped and ran down the canvas (and very possibly into Minnie’s hair). I cried to let out the exhaustion of life.’ She also expressed how ‘freeing’ the workshop was.

Scientific Evidence Supporting Art and Collective Enjoyment

Numerous studies have highlighted the benefits of engaging in arts and cultural activities for mental health. For instance, a UK-based study by Frontier Economics and the World Health Organisation's Collaborating Centre for Arts and Health found that participation in artistic activities can decrease depression, pain, and stress while improving quality of life and cognitive functions. The study also noted that such engagement could reduce loneliness and promote social bonding.


Additionally, viewing art has been linked to increased dopamine levels, the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and comfort. This suggests that both creating and appreciating art can have positive effects on our mood and overall mental health. That’s what keeps me inspired to continue creating my artwork, filled with happy art vibes!


Sharing the Joy of Art: Drink and Draw at The Angel Inn, Grosmont


One of the ways I spread happy art vibes is through my monthly 'Drink and Draw' sessions at The Angel Inn, in Grosmont. Held on the first Thursday of every month, these gatherings are free to attend, just bring a sketch pad and pencil, grab yourself a drink and enjoy. Drink and Draw offers a relaxed environment where individuals can come together to create, chat, and share stories. I’m on hand to give advice, or help you with inspiration. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the therapeutic benefits of art in a social setting, fostering both creativity and community connection.
